I feel really badly bashing this book, but I feel like other potential buyers need to know what they're getting into.As a Frenchie owner, I was interested to see what was in an actual *book* about them. I have done tons of research, but it's all been online, in forums, facebook groups, blogs, etc. I thought it would be neat to see it actually laid out in a book format.
I should have known based off of the lengthy subtitle "What Everybody Ought To Know About French Bulldogs including Easy Training Tips and How To Choose, Feed and Groom Your French Bulldog" that this was not going to be a book I would enjoy reading. It was very clear that this was written by an amateur with little to no writing experience. The flow of the book was awkward, the wording of sentences unclear, and most of the "proven facts" seemed to be nothing more than the writer's own experience. It literally was not written any better, or any more clearly, than a post on an internet forum would be... so why should anyone pay for this. There are five chapters, which each have three sections or so, with an average of three paragraphs per section. So you are only getting about 45 paragraphs of information. Here is a breakdown of the chapters, and some notes I made while reading it.
Chapter 1: The History and Origins of the French Bulldog
- English Origins (... the history of the bulldog is quite fascinating, so this was not a bad chapter, though personally, I did already know about the origins)
- French Popularity
- Frenchies in America
Chapter 2: Characteristics of the Breed
- Physical Characteristics (... this was basically taken straight from the description for the breed standards but some of it was worded quite strangely: "They must weigh no more than 28 lbs if they are still to be recognized as Frenchies, but, even if this is so, it is a grave and harmful mistake to sacrifice the animal's health in order to get it to conform to that particular aspect of the breed standard."... What?)
- Temperament
- Is the Frenchie Right for You? (in the last sentence, the author advises that owners must be prepared to deal with "the expanse of veterinary bills"... this would be much more useful if it included information about what kind of vet bills they could expect to see... skin/hair issues that often require a dermatologist's care; surgery to correct breathing issues like repairing palates, or enlarging the nares; surgery/treatment for spinal issues, which are all too common in Frenchies. These are very serious, and very expensive, medical conditions that aren't even mentioned in this section, and a potential Frenchie owner cannot, and should not, make the decision to own one without knowing about them. So in that regard, the author has failed the readers).
Chapter 3: How to Choose Your French Bulldog
- Only Buy From Reputable Breeders
- What to Watch Out For
- Shelter Dogs are Always an Option
Chapter 4: Caring for Your French Bulldog
- Feeding (the lack of information in this section was laughable. Anyone who knows Frenchies knows they are predispositioned to food allergies, yet no mention was made of that. Most Frenchie owners have to try several different types of kibble before they find one that works, or before they switch to a raw diet (which was not even mentioned in this book).
- Grooming
- Exercise
- Health Care (some mention of some of their health problems here, though I feel it is imperative that potential owners understand the severity of some of these issues, and the cost, which is not explained at all)
- Old Age
Chapter 5: Easy Training Tips
- Becoming the Alpha (this is an excellent tip, but could have used more information in this section)
- Teach your Bulldog its Name (... seriously? This is a training tip?)
- Housebreaking (3 tiny paragraphs that barely touch the surface on how to housetrain your dog)
There was not a single thing I learned from this book, and would recommend that people interested in getting a Frenchie stick to online research or publications from AKC/reputable authors.

Should have read Jamie M.'s review prior to purchasing. Pretty much sums it up. I had been on forums and done my research but thought this book would be a nice supplement. Can honestly say I didn't learn one single thing that I didn't already know (as a Frenchie newbie).
